Advocating for Ibu Lia

Ibu Lia was introduced to the Access Life Lombok Team while receiving medical treatment at the Provincial Hospital in Lombok. A native of the neighboring island of Sumbawa, she was diagnosed with Hemolytic Anemia eight months into her pregnancy. She could not receive proper treatment on her island and was therefore sent to Lombok.  During her first appointment with the internist, Lia was told that the only treatment she could receive would most likely kill the baby.  This was the point at which Access Life Lombok was contacted for assistance.

The Access Life Lombok Social Team offered to attend the doctor's appointments with Lia and her husband, Edi, to provide moral support and help them ask questions regarding alternative treatment options. Thankfully the doctors chose another treatment route and were able to give Lia a steroid medication to stabilize her hemoglobin levels along with several blood transfusions.

The Access Life Lombok Social Team also assisted the family in finding multiple blood donors in the area so that Lia could receive the treatment she needed. We were able to accompany Lia and her husband to several appointments with the obstetrician and follow-up appointments with the internist. After two weeks of treatments and medical appointments in Lombok, Lia was given permission to return home to Sumbawa to wait out the remainder of her pregnancy. Their daughter Qolbi was born healthy and full-term later that month.
